SUGAR LOAF UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
100th ANNIVERSARY CHURCH FAIR
The Sugar Loaf United Methodist Church will celebrate its 100th Anniversary Church Fair on Saturday, September 10th, rain or shine. The historic Greek revival church is located on Kings Highway in the hamlet of Sugar Loaf. The Fair will open at 10:00 a.m. with the traditional ringing of the bell and will end at 4:00 p.m. In past years, the line of fairgoers has stretched out to the highway as people eagerly wait to check out the bargains in the white elephant booth, buy a delicious pie, or purchase a hand woven rug.
Throughout its history, the annual Church Fair has always been a day to visit with friends and neighbors and to support the “community” church. A Warwick Dispatch news article from July 1916 mentions food, fancy work and entertainment at that first Fair. One hundred years later, this year’s Fair will continue to offer similar things.
Good things to eat have been a big part of every Fair and this year will certainly offer something for everyone’s taste. There will be dozens of delicious pies along with home-baked breads, cakes, and cookies. Also for sale will be homemade candy, jams and jellies, gifts in a jar, and containers of frozen soup. Sandwiches will be available for lunch at the snack bar.
The Church has a very active and dedicated group of crafters who work throughout the year making each of the items for sale at the Fair. Old-fashioned fancywork will include hand knit sweaters and accessories, American Girl doll clothes and doll furniture, baby items, and denim rag rugs. There will be a nice selection of Christmas and Halloween decorations and items for home and garden. A new “pet shop” will feature items for your four legged friends.
The white elephant booth is sure to offer many “treasures’’ for very little money. Shoppers always enjoy browsing through the boxes of used books.
Entertainment during the lunch hour will be provided by the band Side By Side.
Items for sale are handcrafted and homemade by members and friends of Sugar Loaf Methodist Church and all proceeds support the ministries of the Church. Come visit the Fair and see why this traditional event has endured for the past century!
